Discourses on encountering multilingual learners in Finnish schools
2020
Abstract The study examines the narratives of Finnish lower secondary school teachers working in linguistically diverse schools by analysing their narratives’ discourses on encountering multilingual learners. The study reflects the current period when the Finnish education system is experiencing growth in linguistic diversity and a change in educational policies that require language awareness from all teachers. In the study, 16 teachers participated in semi-structured group interviews. The teachers’ narratives were analysed by applying a framework for linguistically responsive teaching (Lucas & Villegas, 2013) in combination with discourse analytical methods. The analysis resulted in six d…
Action research as a school-based strategy in intercultural professional development for teachers
2011
Abstract Teacher professional development is a key factor for transforming professional and school culture. This article describes a case study undertaken in a Spanish school during the 2007–2008 academic year. Our aim is to explain how action research methodology was applied to encourage professional and school culture towards an intercultural and inclusive approach. Our results show that the training process challenged teachers’ pre-existing deficit theory perspectives and empowered them as leaders for school change. The conclusions identify the key factors that enabled teachers to engage in critical reflection, and to implement strategies for collaborative work and community participatio…

LA PERSPECTIVA DE LA ÉTICA DEL CUIDADO: UNA FORMA DIFERENTE DE HACER EDUCACIÓN
2010
A Lonely Profession?
2019
In educational research, the teaching profession is often treated as interaction located only in the classroom, with less attention to other aspects of school reality. Some studies, and the Finnish national curriculum (2014), suggest that the school system needs more practices that aim at negotiation, cooperation, and interaction with the surrounding society. In Finland, where both the teaching profession and the educational system are highly regarded, Finnish primary education has been criticized for its immobility and lack of flexibility. The qualitative research presented in this article draws on interview data collected from 13 Finnish (elementary) classroom teachers. The results of thi…

‘We Don't Question Whether We Can Do This’: Teacher Identity in Two Co-Teachers' Narratives
2012
Through the concept of teacher identity, this article examines in detail the factors in the process through which the two teachers under study changed from traditional teachers into co-teaching professionals. The interview data were analysed by thematic narrative analysis. The results showed that the teachers' own attitudes, conflicts in their classrooms and experience of collaboration had created an idea of co-teaching. This idea, combined with a supportive school culture, resulted in the final solution — a shared classroom. It can be concluded that when a certain kind of teacher identity is combined with supportive collegiality, it can lead teachers to find positive solutions to a stress…
El legado de las voces y los escritos: su valor como testimonio de la cultura escolar
2020
ABSTRACT The article analyzes the ways by which the voices and writings from the past, both those that have reached us as those that we still can obtain from living people, may contribute in a special way to the knowledge and interpretation of school culture from the past. We argue they make a very important and valuable historical and educational heritage, which must be saved and availed. The potentialities and values of these resources, "egodocuments", are indicated through it, and also their problems, as well as the limitations and cautions to be considerated by the researcher. Several aspects are reviewed and analyzed through the entire work: the “testimonies”' value as an object of int…
Tensions in the New Millennium : Inclusion Ideology and Education Policy in the Finnish Comprehensive School
2017
This article examines the discrepancy between the ideology of inclusive education and the national education policy in the Finnish comprehensive school education. The study covers twenty years and is based on observations that indicate that the change in comprehensive school education, grounded in inclusive education ideals, has been slow. This has been the case, even though Finnish education policy has, on principle, committed to many international statements that promote inclusion ideology. The data consists primarily of statistics indicating the number of students in special education and national and international research on the subject. It confirms our supposition, but also the fact t…
